Why Photographing Dads Matters More Than You Think

By Nerissa Duncan ·

The hug that stuck

Last Father's Day, I photographed a beautiful session with a family whose dad had just returned from a long business trip. His wife quietly mentioned that they had almost no photos of him with the kids. He was always behind the scenes or simply... away.

But during that session, something special happened. His two little ones ran toward him like he was the sun, the moon, and everything in between. They wrapped themselves around his legs, tugged on his sleeves, giggled as he scooped them into the air. It wasn't posed or planned. It was messy, tight, and completely full of love.

Later, his wife wrote to say: “These are the first real photos we have of my husband just being a dad.” That moment stayed with me. Because that's what photography is really about, not the perfect pose, but the presence. The feeling. The memory your kids will hold onto when they're all grown up.

Let go of the let's-just-get-through-it photos

If you've ever felt like Father's Day photos are just another thing to tick off the event list, you're not alone. Many of the families I work with tell me something like, “We want the photos, but we're awkward in front of the camera,” or “He's not one for photos unless we convince him.”

But here's the thing. You don't need a perfect pose to make a perfect memory.

Fatherhood isn't one size fits all. Sometimes it's a quiet cuddle, other times it's flying your toddler like an airplane across the grass. And the best photographs of dads happen when everyone forgets there's a camera around.

Your kids don't care if your shirt is a little wrinkled or your hair is windblown. They care that you're there, laughing, playing, carrying them up the trail, or reading their favourite story for the thousandth time.

1. Do something you already love together

Instead of forcing a scene, let's photograph something familiar. That could look like:

  • Bushwalking with the kids in Sydney's Hills District, Blue Mountains or by the coastline
  • Building Lego in your living room
  • Kicking a soccer ball in the backyard
  • Handing out pancakes on a slow Sunday morning

These are the things your kids will remember. And they make for the kind of natural, candid images that feel true to your family.

2. Dress for the moment, not the magazine

You don't need to overthink your outfits. Choose something comfortable and reflective of your lifestyle: think soft textures, easy layers, and clothes that move with you.

  • Earth tones, linen shirts, or a lived-in tee that tells a story
  • No need to match perfectly. I promise, cohesive is better than coordinated
  • Shoes are optional, especially when you're at the beach or in your own backyard

3. Embrace the chaos

Kids get wild. That's part of the magic.

If they decide to tickle dad mid-photo or run off chasing a butterfly, we'll capture that too. Some of the most heartwarming images come from letting go of the plan and leaning into the moment.

Your kids don't need to “behave” for a beautiful photograph. They just need to be themselves. And you just need to be their dad, fully present.

4. You don't need a special occasion to show up in the frame

Father's Day is a beautiful reminder to step into the photo. But the truth is, anytime is the right time to document the relationship you're building with your children.

You don't need to wait for an event. You don't need to wait until work slows down. You don't need to wait until you feel more ready.

Your children love you now, in this season, exactly as you are. Making those memories visible is a gift for them, and for you.

These photos become part of your family's story

Photographing dads isn't just about gifting someone a nice print. It's about honouring presence in a time that moves faster than we can hold.

When your children are older and wondering what Dad looked like when he carried them on his shoulders or kissed their skinned knee or laughed with his whole chest, these are the photos they'll reach for. Tangible love, captured forever.

So whether you've been meaning to get in front of the lens or have been waiting for the “right time,” let this be your gentle nudge.

Because these wild, fleeting days won't wait. But they can be remembered.
